Anyone can tell that, as of late, our world has been alarmingly active on a political and social scale. A lot has been happening that - in my opinion - most people don't really understand; and I definitely count myself among those people. But that's not because I'm dumb, or blissfully unaware... I feel the wrong, like the earth isn't sitting quite right; I know poor decisions are being made, and those in power are only out to satisfy their own agendas even at the detriment of their constituents. I don't understand because I don't have the information. But, the key difference between myself and almost everyone else is that I WANT the information. I would rather (insert something that is perceived as incredibly boring and overly academic) than EVER hear anything else about whatever a Snooki is, or even hear about another Jonas brother.
That being said, I think the events that really inspired me to actually sit and write THIS post were watching 2016: Obama's America, and waking up this morning realizing it was the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York City.
Today's world is a scary place, and tomorrow's is even scarier... but to understand either of them, we need to know what happened in the past. As a species, humanity has become completely unaware -- I would go so far as to say willfully ignorant -- of its earliest accomplishments. This both discourages and saddens me.
This feeling leads me to recommend a short list of films, for anyone who cares:
1. God Bless America (2011)
2. 2016: Obama's America (2012)
3. Tony Robbins, "Why We Do What We Do" (2006) -- can be found at http://www.ted.com/talks/tony_robbins_asks_why_we_do_what_we_do.html
4. Pretty much every TED video ever created
